While installing the flange, the thread stripped out on one of the screws so obviously it is not hardened steel as I would have expected.
Can't use that flange now and I am open to suggestions

The bolts are hardened steel but the flange is not. The reason for this is to protect the engine (which is more expensive than the flange) from damage.
